Ken Turner from Cameron Park, California has won the latest tournament to take place within the ongoing WSOP Circuit Thunder Valley festival. Last night, the poker pro topped the field of the $400 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed Turbo for his career’s best cash of $15,525 and a coveted gold piece from the popular poker series.
The tournament attracted a 172-person field that, due to the fast-paced action, was whittled down to just one player over the course of a single day. A prize pool of $55,440 was created by the event’s entries, but only a handful of them received a share of the money. To be more precise, there were payouts for the top 18 finishers, with min-cashes starting from $687.
Players kicked off action with 15,000 starting chips, which they had the difficult task to multiply and protect in order to advance further into the tournament. The event featured a $50,000 guarantee, which was crushed, as mentioned earlier. Players played 20-minutes levels that provided for speedy action and for determining the winner within the matter of a couple of hours on Thursday at the host casino, Thunder Valley in the Sacramento area of California.
Turner was second in chips at the time there were only seven players left in contention and were moved together to the unofficial final table. The player held 536,000 in chips at that point in play, with Ram Kakkar being the only one to hold a larger stack than his. The unofficial final table chip leader had a total of 679,000 before cards were thrown in the air to mark the next stage of action in the tournament.
Heads-Up
It did not take that long before the name of the champion became clear. And it was up to Turner and Kakkar to determine who would end up with the gold ring and the lion’s share of the prize pool. Heads-up was an equally short ordeal as the rest of the tournament. Turner was eventually the last man standing after his [9s][10h] held up against his opponent’s cards on what turned out to be the final hand dealt, while Kakkar had to head to the payouts desk to collect his cash of $9,596 for finishing second in the tournament.
This was the largest cash Turner has ever won in his poker career. And it was in January of this year when the player decided that poker would become his occupation. Turner had previously worked in the logistics industry. He said last night after his triumph that he had made “some fortunate investments” that had allowed him the freedom to pursue a career in poker and leave his other job.
Last night’s win was the player’s second-ever cash from the WSOP Circuit series. He won his first one several days ago when he finished 11th in the $400 No-Limit Hold’em opening event with five starting flights at Thunder Valley Casino. Turner collected $5,838 from that event.
