Dutchman Danny Van Zijp wins WPTDeepStacks Brussels after action-packed final day

Danny van Zijp from the Netherlands has just become the brand-new WPTDeepStacks champion after outlasting the 535-strong field of the Brussels Main Event at Grand Casino Viage. The player claimed €110,000 from the prize pool and a €2,000 ticket into the season-ending WPT European Championships, slated to take place next April in Nottingham.

Van Zijp was one of 19 players to come into the final day of the Brussels Main Event on Sunday. While he was doing pretty well throughout the day, it was during heads-up when he demonstrated the best of his poker skills.

The final day of the tournament kicked off with Peter Jaksland leading the pack of 19. However, the player saw his solid stack diminish over the course of action and he eventually busted in 4th place, good for €40,000.

Action unfolded quickly during the first stages of final day play, with four players departing during the first level. However, as the nine-handed final table was set, action reduced its pace, with players clearly being unwilling to lose their shot at the title and the first-place prize.

The field was eventually whittled down to just three players, with those being Van Zijp, Paul van Oort, and Jose Astima. It was at that point when Astima began gaining momentum, which he kept into heads-up. After a while of three-handed action, Van Oort busted in third place for a cash prize of €53,000. That left it to Astima and Ban Zijp to determine the winner.

Heads-Up Highlights

The two-handed duel kicked off with Astima holding a substantial chip lead over his last remaining opponent. The player extended his advantage early on, but Van Zijp gained momentum at a certain point in play to take control over the majority of chips in play and never look back.

On what turned out to be the final hand in play, Van Zijp raised to 375,000 pre-flop and Astima shoved for 4 million. Van Zijp snap-called and tabled [Jd][Js] to Astima’s [10h][10d]. The board served blank [4h][2c][9d][7h][5d] and Van Zijp’s pocket jacks withheld to lock him the title and the first-place prize. Astima departed as the runner-up, scooping €75,000 for his terrific performance and deep run into the event.

Including his latest victory, Van Zijp now has more than $360,000 in live tournament earnings. The player has cashed in multiple tournaments over the years, mostly ones that have taken place in his homeland, but none of his previous in-the-money finishes have come anywhere near his most recent one.

With the end of the Main Event, the WPTDeepStacks Brussels has wrapped another successful poker festival on European soil. The popular WPT brand is next heading to India for its next grand poker event. The riverboat Deltin Royale Casino Goa will play host to the upcoming WPTDeepStacks festival, and its highlight INR55,000 Main Event is set to kick off in just four days.
