This year, for the first time the Main Event was not the tournament to conclude the WSOP. However, this does not mean that the 2018 edition of the popular poker series will not be wrapped in style. The $1,000,000 Big One for ONE DROP is back at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino after having its previous edition held in Europe and the tournament’s first day is already in the books.
As one could expect, the major event once again attracted poker’s elite. As many as 24 players paid the hefty $1-million buy-in fee on Sunday to participate in the 2018 Big One for ONE DROP. Registration is set to close at the start of Day 2, which means that some latecomers could join the pack of poker celebrities for two more days of quality high roller action.
The prize pool generated so far amounts to $22.08 million. It is yet to be seen whether more would be added to it and how the money would be distributed.
Day 1 of the tournament featured ten one-hour levels and there were 19 players to bag and tag for the night. By the time all ten levels were completed, it was Rick Salomon who had accumulated the largest overnight stack. The player put 11.445 million in his bag to call it a day.
Salomon has two final table appearances in previous editions of the Big One for ONE DROP. In 2014, the player finished fourth, good for a payout of $2.8 million. During the 2016 edition of the tournament in Monte Carlo, Salomon improved to third-place finish to collect €3 million. With these results in mind, the player will certainly look to improve and eventually scoop a title from major high roller event.
Other Notables Running Good
Trailing not far behind Salomon, ten-time WSOP gold bracelet winner and poker superstar Phil Ivey occupies the second spot in the temporary leaderboard. Ivey, who has been quite active during the 2018 WSOP after disappearing from the tournament scene for a couple of years, bagged and tagged 10.365 million last night. All-time money list leader Daniel Negreanu scooped the third largest stack after Day 1, good for 8.1 million.
Dan Smith (7.735 million), Erik Seidel (6.835 million), Dominik Nitsche (6.55 million), Jason Koon (6.54 million), and Christoph Vogelsang (5.68 million) were, too, among the elite poker players to make it to the end of Day 1.
Unfortunately, a group of notables busted during the first day of the tournament. It included David Peters, 2012 Big One for ONE DROP champ Antonio Esfandiari, Isaac Haxton, Bryn Kenney, and Jake Schindler, eliminated in that order.
Day 2 of the prestigious tournament is set to kick off today at noon local time at the host casino. The 19 players are expected to be joined by more notables who will take advantage of the late registration opportunity. Contenders are set to play down to the final six.
