The 2009 WSOP Main Event champ, Joe Cada, is looking to add a third gold bracelet to his career portfolio as he is leading a pack of 10 players into the final day of Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em SHOOTOUT.
The player already has more than $10 million in WSOP earnings and has recorded 29 cashes within the series, which certainly means that he is quite comfortable playing WSOP events and makes him a feared opponent.
Day 2 of the SHOOTOUT tournament was played on Friday at the host venue, Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. It kicked off with 50 players still in contention for the first-place payout and the gold bracelet.
Fourteen-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth was among the final 50. The player was trying to smash another WSOP gold piece record, but without much success as he eventually busted in 21st place for $6,302 in prize money.
The Day 2 hopefuls played five-handed tables until there were just ten of them left. Hellmuth, in particular, found himself playing against some very tough opponents at his table, including Ihar Soika and Eli Elezra. It was eventually Soika who came out on top of that star-studded table.
The young poker pro faced quite some comments from Hellmuth and Elezra in relation to his aggressive style. However, Soika did not lose his composure for a second, and putting pressure at the right time, he busted both his celebrity opponents. Soika will enter the final day of action seventh in chips.
Other notables that progressed into Day 3 included Sam Phillips, WSOP veteran Joshua Turner, who is about to scoop cash number 59 from the series, and Anthony Reategui, who has a gold bracelet from a $1,500 SHOOTOUT event.
Former Main Event Champs in Contention
Aside from the overnight chip leader, there is one more former World Championship winner vying for the SHOOTOUT title. Joe McKeehen, who won the Main Event three years ago, was too among the Day 2 survivors.
The player will enter Day 3 as one of the short stacks, but he still has plenty of time to recover, build a solid stack and win the tournament for his third bracelet from the series.
Action is set to resume at the host venue at noon Las Vegas time with the ten finalists. They will play until there is just a single player left who will become the winner of the third gold bracelet of this year’s edition of the WSOP. A victory is also worth $226,218 of the $980,100 prize pool. Each of the ten finalists is guaranteed a minimum cash of $14,437. Aside from the final 10 contenders, all Day 2 participants also received a cash from the tournament.
