Italian Gambling Regulatory Body Rolls Out New Nationwide Self-Exclusion Programme

The major gambling regulatory body in Italy – the Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS) – has rolled out a special nationwide self-exclusion programme aimed at helping problem gamblers. The launch of the self-exclusion programme came after industry stakeholders called for the Government to upgrade its existing responsible gambling measures for at-risk customers.

As a result, Italian problem gamblers now have a single online form which is to allow them to exclude themselves from all licensed gambling companies that operate on the Italy’s regulated online gambling market. The new self-exclusion scheme would make it easier for customers to stay away from online gambling operators as it would provide them with the opportunity bar themselves from every online gambling operator that currently operates legally on the territory of the country, instead of making individual suspension requests to the operators.

The newly-unveiled self-exclusion system is set to help gambling addicts stay away from online gambling platforms forever or for a fixed period of time. In case they want to take advantage of the new system, customers need to use the reference website of the gambling self-exclusion system. After a request is made by a player, operators would not only close their account, but would also make sure that the customer’s account is blocked from all gaming websites in the country.

New System Would Make Self-Exclusion Easier in Italy

By the time the new self-exclusion system has been made available to users through the register, a player was able to make a self-exclusion, but their request was only valid in terms of a certain website. What is more, players were able to circumvent the self-exclusion by opening another account with another online gambling operator.

Under the new self-exclusion system, once a customer has filled in the form and their request is received by an online operator, the latter would have to close the player’s account right away and then forward the self-exclusion request to the central registry. As a result, all online gambling companies which operate under an Italian license must block the player from accessing their websites. As mentioned above, customers would be given the chance to choose whether to exclude themselves temporarily (for a period of six months) or on a permanent basis.

Over the past few years, the number of people who asked to take advantage of their self-exclusion right has increased. For example, 56,000 players asked gambling operators to block their accounts and ban them from accessing their websites in 2017 – a figure which represented a 6% increase in comparison to the results revealed in 2016. The figure also stands for about 3% of the overall number of online gamblers in Italy.

The number of registered online gamblers amounted to 3.7 million at the end of 2017, with a total of 8.2 million online gambling accounts created. As far as gambling frequency is concerned, approximately 25% of the customers who played online place at least one wager on a monthly basis. In comparison, the percentage rate of these players amounted to 22% in 2016.
