Ioannis Angelou-Konstas made history at Grand Casino Brussels Viage last night as he took down the WPTDeepStacks Brussels €1,200 Main Event for his second title from the series and a first-place prize of nearly €75,000.
The player became only the second one to win two WPTDeepStacks titles in the history of the series. Rex Clinkscales doubled his first title in Tampa by winning a Main Event in Edmonton last year to become the first two-time WPTDeepStacks Main Event champion.
However, Angelou-Konstas became last night the first-ever player two win two Main Events on European soil since the series arrived on the continent last year. The player first bested the field of the WPTDeepStacks Netherlands last October and then won the Brussels event just a couple of hours ago.
The Greek poker pro entered the final day of action at the host venue holding overwhelming chip lead over his remaining opponents. Angelou-Konstas maintained his advantage throughout the final table except for very few and very brief moments during which other players managed to pull ahead a bit.
One such moment involved Milan Rabsz who eliminated Michael Lech, scooping a significant pot to take over the chip lead for a very short period of time. However, Angelou-Konstas regained momentum quite quickly to emerge the chip leader once again. At some point, the Greek poker player was in possession of six of all nine million chips in play.
Eventually, Angelou-Konstas faced Martin Kaya heads-up. Kaya had 3.7 million in chips to his opponent’s 5.75 million at the start of two-handed play. The eventual runner-up picked some of his chips on his way into heads-up by eliminating Gianluca Bucchino, the Day 1A chip leader, and Rabsz.
Heads-Up Action
While Kaya had some momentum heading into the two-handed match, Angelou-Konstas gave him little chance to take a shot at the title. The duel lasted several hands during which the eventual champion kept weakening his final opponent’s resolve and chip stack.
On the final hand of play, Kaya moved all in pre-flop for his last 720,000 and Angelou-Konstas gave it some thought before calling. Kaya tabled [Kh][6h] to his opponent’s [Qd][3d]. The board ran out [Ah][7d][4h][6c][Qc] to secure Angelou-Konstas with the title and the tournament trophy. Hitting the rail in second place, Kaya collected €52,050 for his efforts.
Aside from the first-place payout and the tournament trophy, the champion also secured a seat into the season-ending WPTDeepStacks Europe championship.
The WPTDeepStacks Brussels Main Event attracted 315 entries who competed for a portion of the €336,105 prize pool. The tournament was played between March 8-11 at the host venue Grand Casino Brussels Viage in the heart of the Belgian capital.
The Netherlands will be the next European stop on the WPTDeepStacks’ schedule. The Dutch capital and its emblematic Holland Casino will play host to the series from April 13 through April 21.
